WHY TO VISIT THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON RAINFOREST?

The Ecuadorian Amazon invites us to discover a world of infinite diversity, part of its inhabitants – members of ancestral people – for its rich flora, fauna, landscapes, and variety of activities to perform

The Amazon region of Ecuador is a natural region conformed by an approximate area of 120,000 km² of the South American Amazon. It includes the provinces of Sucumbíos, Orellana, Napo, Pastaza, Morona, and Zamora. It extends over an area of exuberant vegetation, typical of humid-tropical forests, representing 43% of the Ecuadorian territory. More than 13 indigenous people with their own languages, beliefs, and traditions make the Ecuadorian Amazon a mega-cultural destination, which allows us to interact and know the customs of its inhabitants living directly with them. One of every ten species of flora and fauna in the world is found here, so it is also considered the most mega-diverse place on the planet per square kilometer.

Competitive prices and the best accessibility to all of South America´s jungle through the Ecuadorian Amazon, making it an excellent destination to visit as a family. Why? There are many reasons to embark on an adventure through the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest.

Home of remarkable biodiversity

Yasuni National Park is home to 150 species of amphibians, 121 reptile species, 382 known fish species, 596 species of birds, 300 mammal species, 117 bat species, and over 100,000 insect species. In 1989 Yasuní National Park was made a World Biosphere Reserve as part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program. Wildlife in Yasuni National Park includes jaguars, caimans, toucans, macaws, monkeys, turtles, marmosets, and many, many more.

Many of our favorite foods come from the Amazon: avocado, black and red pepper, Brazilian nuts, cashew, cocoa, cinnamon, aubergine, fig, ginger, sugar cane, vanilla, and the sweet potato, among many others.

This region is also a source of many healing substances such as quinine for malaria, curare for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s; also of many industrial products such as latex, resins, wood, oil, and many minerals.

Indigenous tribes

This tropical region is home to thousands of indigenous people belonging to some 200 different nationalities. Among the best known are the Siona, Secoya, Cofan, Shuar, Zaparo, Huaorani, and Quichua. The indigenous tribes that inhabit the Ecuadorian jungle are the ancestral guardians of the biological inheritance of this region of the world. Having lived there for more than 10,000 years, they know their plants, their animals and their secrets better than anyone else.

Activities for everybody

What a better way to experience the forest than bathing in its rivers, to walk its paths and to balance on the treetops? There are several activities to do, each surrounded by the beauty of nature: trekking, kayaking or SUP, rafting, tubing, canopy, the sighting of many of fauna that inhabits there.

Tourist accommodations

Highly developed tourist infrastructure outside of national parks and reserves: from five-star lodges to eco-camps in the middle of the jungle. The Yasuní National Park allows visitors to walk into its paths and live the adventure of entering the beauty of their lands.

How to get to the Amazon

Some airlines have flights to Coca, however, you can reach the main cities by bus and from there take boats through the rivers to reach the most remote places.

Flip to the Ecuador mainland and depart for the ultimate Amazon expedition in a remote and untouched area of the UNESCO YASUNI Biosphere Reserve & National Park. Experience the tremendous biodiversity and wildlife of the reserve and connect with a native Kichwa tribe still living in the authentic and traditional way, while camping in the heart of the dense rainforest. Live the adventure as you promote long-term conservation and sustainability in two of the most precious, diverse ecosystems in the world!
