TRIP OVERVIEW

With the Amazon camping expedition, you will have the Amazon Basin at your fingertips. It is the perfect adventure for nature lovers, jungle explorers, and wildlife watchers who would like to experience the untouched Amazon. You will discover Ecuador’s Amazon in the Yasuni National Park, world-famous for its tremendous biodiversity and its authentic indigenous cultures which are still very much alive. On this trip, while passing through rivers and lagoons, you will feel as if the animals are following you. You will see displays of parrots, toucans, macaws, kingfishers, herons, flying across the river, as well as curious giant otters who will approach the canoe to have a look. Many different types of monkeys will be jumping on the trees and there will be chances to spot jaguars, the master cat predators of the jungle. The Huoarani native people will share their history and we will learn about their rich connection with Mother Nature.

Flip to the Ecuador mainland and depart for the ultimate deep-Amazon expedition in a remote and untouched area of the UNESCO YASUNI Biosphere Reserve & National Park. Experience the tremendous biodiversity and wildlife of the reserve and connect with a native Huaorani tribe still living in the authentic and traditional way, while camping in the heart of the dense rainforest. Live the adventure as you promote long-term conservation and sustainability in two of the most precious, diverse ecosystems in the world!

Unique Experiences:

  • Stay along the river shore in the heart of the Amazon rainforest and explore the jungle in the dark through an amazing night hike.
  • Share time with native Huaorani people, hearing their stories and legends and learning about their traditions, which are still alive.

ITINERARY

Enter to another world

Our trip begins in El Coca. We will travel for 2 hours by car on the Auca road to the Shiripuno River. Once there we will embark on a motorized canoe, it will take us approximately 2 hours to reach this gateway to the Waorani territory.

While you enter the Yasuni, you can enjoy the lush green sea of rainforest and its unique inhabitants since you will likely get a good look at some of the different animal species that live in this magical place. You can find toucans, macaws, and monkeys along the way.

After a four-hour expedition, you will finally arrive at our Safari Camp’s cozy installations. Our carefully selected staff will greet you, and you will have a welcome dinner this evening around 7:00 p.m.

SERVICES INCLUDED

  • 🏕️ Accommodation: Wao Kamp
  • 🍽️ Meals included: Lunch, Dinner

Intimate encounters with ancient cultures
We start our adventure early to seize the best of the day. You can enjoy a healthy breakfast at 6:30 am before heading to the river for a 30-minute paddle. After a 300-meter walk carrying the boats, you can explore and navigate through the Anaconda Lagoon. This amazing oxbow lake is a special ecosystem and home to the Eunectes murinus, the largest and biggest anaconda species.
Then, in the late morning, we continue our adventure with a canoe ride for around forty minutes to a second lagoon. Here, you can spot giant otters and other species. After this, depending on our time, we might explore a third lagoon.
Around 1:30 pm, we’ll enjoy lunch and rest a little before embarking on a unique cultural experience with the inhabitants of the National Park. Around 3:30 pm, we will go to Gaba’s house. Gaba is the head of his family and a community leader. With him, you’ll learn some local legends and be part of their culture. Learn how the Wao spears are crafted, and use a blow-dart to understand how they hunt and sustain themselves. You can also appreciate their local art and jewelry made from the surrounding materials.
After this experience, we’ll head back to the Camping area to wrap up the day—but not before having dinner at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Amazing 10 day Ecuador land trip with Alfonzo We had a wonderful 10 day trip exploring Ecuador with our guide, Alfonzo. He was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun. We learned about the history and culture of Ecuador and heard personal stories about Alfonzo’s family and life in Ecuador and the Galapagos. We hiked mountains, visited historic sites, hot springs and the Amazon and ate local food (including grubs!). We lucked out and our friends and us (4 people) were the only partipants on our tour so we got extra attention and could help shape our experience more. Also, Alfonzo’s knowledge of the English language is impressive. He even got our jokes and joined in. I would strongly recommend using Adventure Journeys and ask for Alfonzo for your Ecuador land tour.

Wonderful Quito visit Sol our guide gave us a wonderful taste of Quito and the surrounding area. We visited a biscotti making business, the equator solar museum, a colourful market in an Andean town, another town that sold leather and finally visited a waterfall On a second day we had a walking tour of historic Quito. She was an excellent guide with great humour and very friendly and helpful to all our group

Ecuador Is Incredible. Such a great trip! Alfonso was our guide -- he is fantastic. The itinerary gives you a pretty good overview of Ecuador. My favorite days were those we spent in the Amazonian forest near Tena, hiking on Chimborazo, and exploring Cuenca. We were able to stay in a couple of haciendas -- those were wonderful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Yes, long kayak crossings on the river require good swimming ability.
Will I see anacondas or caimans?
Highly possible though not guaranteed. Considering the wildlife in the area there are high probabilities of spotting rare wildlife, especially small caimans and water snakes but chances may vary depending on weather conditions or similar.
Is there electricity at the campsite?
Yes, the accommodation offers solar-powered electricity though limited to some areas and schedules. We recommend to bring a power bank.
