Trekking along the Andes’ most amazing landscapes of the famous Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuadorian highlands. This trekking adventure will transport you into the heart of the Andean culture to experience the local way of living, hiking narrow trails used by the local mountain people.
Trek to reach Quilotoa volcano, Hike down the base of the Caldera of Quilotoa and take a kayak to explore the volcanic activity of this magical crater with possible opportunities of swimming in volcanic waters.
ITINERARY
Early in the morning, after a hearty breakfast, we will drive for 3 hours to Chugchilán village. From here we will begin our 4 to 5 hour trekking adventure on small trails blazed by mountain people and still used by locals to transport commercialized products and travel across canyons of the Andean range to reach neighboring communities.
While trekking, you may witness the traditional practice of bartering goods, still alive in these communities. We’ll hike down across impressive canyons and then climb back up to the top of the crater rim, where stunning views of the Quilotoa Lake will reward your effort. The magic of this place will take your breath away.

Quilotoa Crater Lake is our main goal on this day. After breakfast, we will hike down to the base of the crater in the middle of the volcano, following a beautiful steep trail considered sacred by the local communities living around Quilotoa.
Once at the lake, you will have time to explore this mythical active volcano and, if you wish, go for a swim in its volcanic waters. We will then take kayaks and paddle for approximately half an hour to the heart of the volcano to observe water springs bubbling up from volcanic activity.
On the way back from the crater, if you feel a bit tired, you have the unique opportunity to rent a mule and ride up the challenging steep trail.
In the afternoon, we will visit a small village with a colorful market located in the heart of the Ecuadorian highlands — a perfect opportunity to witness the authentic life of the local people.
Later in the afternoon, we will drive back to Quito.
