Welcome to Costa Rica! The drive from Juan Santamaria International Airport to your San Jose hotel is about 17 km (10.5 miles), taking around 40 minutes. San Jose, the capital city, is the main gateway to Costa Rica. Founded in 1738, it’s a modern city with plenty of cultural attractions, including the Costa Rican Art and Gold Museums and the beautiful National Theatre. San Jose also has a mix of historical buildings, parks, and restaurants, from casual “sodas” to fine dining. Though the city isn’t large, it’s easy to walk around or use taxis. The nightlife offers something for everyone.

The drive from San Jose to Tortuguero is 130 km (81 miles), taking about 4 hours. Tortuguero, located in the northeast of Costa Rica, is accessible only by small plane or boat along the famous Tortuguero Canals. This system of rivers and channels winds through beautiful primary forests. Established as a national park in 1975, Tortuguero is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country. Its name comes from the Spanish word for turtle, as it’s an important nesting site for green sea turtles, along with leatherbacks and hawksbills. Exploration is mostly done by boat, with some hiking trails available.

Enjoy a free day to explore Tortuguero or relax at your hotel. Tortuguero National Park is a wild area home to a variety of animals. You can see mammals, birds, and fish living in eleven different habitats. The park has a 22-mile beach, which is an important nesting site for sea turtles. Hawksbill and Loggerhead from July to October, and the Leatherback, the largest sea turtle, from February to July. Most of the park is explored by boat, where expert guides help you spot animals and share interesting facts about nature.

We’ll take a 3-hour and 25-minute drive from Tortuguero to Fortuna, which is 173 km (107.5 miles). La Fortuna sits 350 feet above sea level and is best known as the starting point for exploring the Arenal Volcano and National Park. This beautiful, cone-shaped volcano rises from the flat San Carlos Plains, surrounded by mountains. Naturally heated thermal springs flow from the volcano, offering a relaxing experience. The area also has lakes, rivers, rainforests, and many adventure tours. It’s an ideal outdoor destination; from here, it’s easy to visit Monteverde and other parts of Guanacaste.

The tour starts with a drive to El Silencio Private Reserve, where you’ll get close to the base of the Arenal Volcano. Then, you’ll walk about 1 kilometer along a volcanic stone path, which is a moderate hike, to reach the viewpoint, the closest point to the volcano. From this viewpoint, the guide will explain the volcano’s history, including its first eruption in 1968. You’ll also enjoy views of the Green Lagoon and Lake Arenal. Afterward, you’ll descend along the same trail and explore the regenerating forest and primary rainforest. Along the 1.5 km (1 mi) trail, you may spot toucans, turkeys, monkeys, and other wildlife.
