All Soul’s Day: How Ecuadorian honor their loved ones

Mexico’s Day of the Dead is rightfully recognized worldwide thanks to many media representations, and it is rightfully recognized as a wonderful tradition. But Ecuador also has a beautiful tradition to remember our loved ones: All Soul’s Day or the Ecuadorian Day of the Dead.

Why is All Soul’s Day so special?

Most Ecuadorians enjoy this date a lot, and since Halloween has only been introduced in recent years as a widespread celebration among young people, All Soul’s Day is a loved holiday. So, it plays a role in how people relate to their ancestors and death as a whole. It is a unique date for historical, cultural, and social reasons, and its

We already mentioned the Mexican tradition, but All Soul’s Day is also widely extended throughout the region. These dates are related to honoring our ancestors and deceased loved ones with different rituals from each community.

The History behind it

Initially, these traditions were a common practice for the local prehispanic cultures in Latin America. This is crucial to understand the symbolic importance of All Soul’s Day since death rituals were significant for the cultures mentioned above and their interaction with their world.

As time passed, the tradition was influenced by Western culture and the local countercultures. So even though it started as a wholly indigenous tradition, now it is more of a Mestizo holiday. This, of course, means that how we celebrate All Soul’s Day is different depending on the region and city we live.

But being honest and setting all this stuff aside, this holiday is especially expected for one reason: Colada Morada and Guaguas de Pan.

A delicious tradition

What is Colada Morada? And what are Guaguas de Pan as well? Well, they are one of the most delicious typical Ecuadorian dishes. Colada morada was initially made out of black and purple corn with some sweet spices, naranjilla or lulo, and other fruits.

Of course, if experiencing Ecuadorian traditions is the goal you aim to achieve in your trip, our cultural tours may be the option that best suits you. However, you can see the traditions of the local communities on other tours.
