The Galapagos Islands are an exceptional destination among many, starting with being one of the few places in the world where you can live closely with animal life. You can also get to know the different ecosystems of these volcanic islands and animal species that you can only see here.
1.Be friends with Giant tortoises!
Visiting the Galapagos Islands will give you the opportunity to walk and observe up close the Galapagos Giant Tortoises, the largest in the world! These incredible reptiles, besides their large size, are one of the longest living animals on earth. Their average lifespan is over 100 years and they weigh up to 500 kg.
Tortoises are iconic animals of the Galapagos Islands, so on your visit to the enchanted islands you will be able to see several of them. On the islands of San Cristobal, Isabela and Santa Cruz, there are reserves dedicated to the care and preservation of giant tortoises.
Meeting and photographing one of these magnificent tortoises will undoubtedly be a unique experience of a lifetime.
2.Know the only Penguin in the Northern Hemisphere
The Galapagos penguin is the only one of its species that lives in the Northern Hemisphere. The Galapagos Islands are the unique place where you can spot this bird. Most penguins can be found mainly in the Fernandina and Isabela Islands. However, it is also possible to see them in Bartolomé, Floreana, Santiago and Santa Cruz, on occasion.
Unfortunately these little friends are an endangered species. There are only about 1,500 penguins left. So, you can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Galapagos Islands and snorkel or dive with these cute Galapagos penguins.
3.Diving among marine iguanas
Another unique species of the Galapagos Islands is the prehistoric-looking marine iguana, the only one of its kind that lives exclusively on these islands.
These land reptiles are sluggish on land, but excellent and agile swimmers. So snorkeling is one of the best options for spotting iguanas.
Snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands is one of the best experiences you will ever have. You will witness the diverse marine life, sea lions, green sea turtles, penguins, colorful fish and more.
4.The Old Post Office Bay
Floreana Island transports you to the times when the old sailors used to communicate by postcards. We are talking about Post Office Bay, a place founded by English whalers to send letters to their relatives.
They raised a wooden barrel and transformed it into a correspondence channel. Whalers embarking on voyages of several years left letters to be hand-delivered by those returning home.
5.Witness the delightful blue-footed booby mating ritual
If you visit the Galapagos Islands between June and August you will have the opportunity to witness one of the most beautiful mating rituals. The ritual of the tender blue-footed boobies.
This ritual is a real spectacle, where the male booby performs funny courtship dances trying to impress the female. During his movements the booby shows off his bright blue feet to win the female and make her his mate for life.
